Ampex Transport Alignment

Still workin' on this page.... check back again soon !!!
and yes, this is a preliminary page... the photos will get better...

You MUST read through this ENTIRE ALIGNMENT SECTION
before you begin making ANY adjustments.

Basic Transport Alignment:
NON TAKE-UP TENSION CONTROLLER

this is ONLY for machines WITHOUT the Take-up Tension Controller Card !!!!

Now, since the Reel Normalization is done, remember ALL the trim pots
are turned way down....
so the machine will lose tension once it's threaded up.

Load a reel of SCRAP (but not shedding or sticky !!) tape on the deck.

Holding the reels so the tape is tight...
A) if you've got a machine where the brakes are engaged in the
stop mode.... press "LIFTER" this will release the brakes

B) if your machine doesn't have the brake-on in the stop mode,
the machines all ready to go for this adjustment

1) Turn up the Take-up side STOP tension until you feel tension

2) Let go of the Take-up reel ONLY (still hold the Supply Reel)

3) Adjust the take-up side STOP pot until the Tension Arm
goes to it's 2 inch mark. You must hold the SUPPLY
     Reel Firmly.

4) Now Adjust the SUPPLY side STOP pot until you feel tension

5) Release the Supply side from your grasp

6) Adjust the SUPPLY side STOP pot until the tape stops moving,
or until the Tension Arm reaches the 2 inch mark.

7) Now de-tension the machine. Thread the tape OUTSIDE the
capstan. (so the tape will not move !)

8) Hold both reels again.

9) Hit PLAY on the transport

10) Adjust the TAKE-UP side PLAY pot until you feel tension.

11) Release the TAKE-up reel, and adjust the pot until the
tension arm reaches the 2 inch mark. Hold the Supply
      Side reel firmly !!

12) Now adjust the SUPPLY side PLAY pot until you begin to feel tension.

13) Release the Supply Reel. Adjust the Supply side PLAY pot until
the Tension Arm reaches the 2 inch mark.

14) Important !! Now hit stop, then LIFTER. The tape should NOT
move. Then hit play. The tension arm should be at the
2 inch mark. De-tension the machine.
Re-thread the machine correctly. Hit STOP, then LIFTER.
Tape should NOT move. If it does, adjust either side until
the tape stops. You may have to do this a couple of times
until you get it perfect. bit MORE tension is better than less...

15) Now hit play. The tape should run smoothly, and the Tension Arm
should be at the 2 Inch mark. If not, make a small adjustment
on the SUPPLY pot until the arm is at the mark. Now look at the
Take-up side Tape-Break arm. In a well set-up machine, this arm
will be slightly pressing in on the tape. Just a little, not much!

15) Now press Fast Forward. Adjust the SUPPLY SIDE FF pot so that there
is tension, and then adjust it so the Tension Arm reaches the
2 inch mark. This is the peliminary setting.... you want to set
both the Past Mode pots so the tape moves quickly and with enough
Hold-Back tension so the tape is properly wound onto the reel,
and well-packed. So feel free to make an adjustment to suit
      your own machine !!

16) Now, once enought tape is on the Take-up reel, press REWIND.
Adjust the Take-up Side Rewind pot until tension in on the
take-up reel for hold-back, then adjust this so the Tape-Break
Arm just comes in a little bit. Again, you will have to make
adjustments as required for packing the tape well, and allowing
the mcahine to come up to Wind speed quickly.

17) Spool to the END of the reel. Check your STOP tension by
pressing the LIFTER button (releasing the brakes). The
tape should NOT move. Go into PLAY mode, then hit STOP
and quickly LIFTER. Tape should not move to one side or
the other. Check your PLAY tensions. Check your WIND
      tensions. Make adjustments as needed...

18) IF the transport "wobbles" or "shakes" in any mode, you have to
re-set the MATER GAIN pot. This is the pot in the middle of
the card. Turn this slightly one way or the other,
      RE NORMALIZE the reels....
AND DO THE WHOLE TRANSPORT ALIGNMENT OVER AGAIN.....

Now if you have the Take-up BOOST on your Tension Control Card.....

a) Record a section of 1khz at the FRONT of the tape.

b) Play this back, and adjust the correct speed's BOOT pot so that
the tone of the recording just barely increases a bit then drops
quickly back to the correct pitch. The tape should just "Over-shoot"
a little at the begining of the reel.

c) Now switch speeds, and adjust the other speed's BOOST pot like above.

d) now wind to the END of the reel. Again record 1 khz.

e) Play this tone back. IF the pot is correctly set, the tone will come
right up to speed. If the tone does not come up, adjust the BOOST
pot so that it does. The Tape will take a little longer to come up
to speed at the end of the reel. Check both speeds !!

f) VERY IMPORTANT !!! You must check 30 ips at the END of the reel for
tape handleing. Look at the Take-up Tape-Break Arm when you go into
play. Make sure that the tape does not "Slap" back and forth, or that
the Tape-Break Arm does not come in too much. You will often need to
Re-Adjust the 30 ips BOOST pot so the tape runs well at the end of the
reel, rather than at the front.
