Many Otari MX 5050 machines will have an Otari IC called the I-0012 Universal Controller.
The MX 5050 8 track mkIII machine has 3 of these....
Other MX 5050's may have just one or two or three depending on the version
These IC's are a complete 4 bit Microcomputer in one IC -
ROM, RAM, Oscillator, I/O and a Timer/Event Counter - a complete Computer.
The manufacturer's part number is the HD44801 aka HMCS44C
These I-0012 ICs perform various functions -
transport control / tape counter / true direction
and basically run the machine if three of them are in the machine
If there is just one I-0012, it is used as the Tape Counter - True Direction
The HD44801 is a simple early complete 4 bit computer in one IC,
able to perform many functions easily by itself.
BUT the 'program' the IC runs is loaded into ROM inside the IC for easy operation
of the IC in each of it's main functions: Transport Control - Counter - True Direction
and no one has that program code anymore.
Otari I-0012 Pinouts for each IC version !!!!
While you can get a new old-stock HD44801 IC, no one has the Program Codes so no one can program the IC for you...
So if you need to replace one of the I-0012 ICs
You will need to take one out of a parts 5050 machine
of the correct model machine !!!
Basically, if the any of the I-0012 IC's goes bad - You MUST purchase a replacement I-0012 IC.
I now have three of them for sale - but they ARE EXPENSIVE - $ 100.00 per unit.
